UNDERSTANDING OUR CREATOR
This is what the Lord says, “Let not the wise man boast of his wisdom or the strong man boast of his strength or the rich man boast of his riches, but let him who boasts boast about this: that he understands and knows Me, that I am the Lord, who exercises kindness, justice and righteousness on earth, for in these I delight,” declares the Lord (Jer.9:23, 24).
God has been given titles such as ‘Shepherd’, ‘King’ and ‘Father’. Jesus Christ introduced the Creator of the universe as our Father in heaven. Without Jesus, people cannot know God as their own Father. A Pakistani Muslim, Bilquis Sheikh, in her former life without Christ had never known God personally; but after she encountered God through Jesus Christ, she wrote a book entitled I Dared To Call Him Father. We are not slaves of Allah, but children of the Most High. We are members of God’s family.
A Loving Father
‘Father in heaven’ is not a concept introduced by Jesus. That is what God is. He is our loving Father. Jesus had a lot of friends who were called sinners. He came to the world so that sinners may be made saints. Jesus proclaimed the truth that there is great joy among the angels in heaven over one sinner who repents and turns to God (Lk.15:7).
Jesus’ parable of the prodigal son in Luke 15 reveals the loving heart of God for a repentant sinner. “After the son had spent all his money, he said, ‘My father has many men who work for him. They have plenty of food. But here I am dying because I have nothing to eat! I will get up and go to my father. I will say to him, “Father I have been a bad son. I have done wrong to God in heaven and to you. I am not good enough now to be called your son. Let me be like one of these men who work for you.”’ So he got up and went to his father. While he was still far away, his father saw him. He loved him and wanted to share in his troubles. He ran and put his arms around him and kissed him. His father said to his servants, ‘Go quickly and bring the best clothes. Dress him. Put a ring on his hand. Put shoes on his feet. Bring the fat calf and kill it. Let us have a feast and a good time. This is my son. He was dead and now he is alive again. He was lost and is found.’ And they began to have a good time.”
A Loving Son
The Bible says that God does not want anyone to perish or go to hell – the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels. He wants all people to know the truth. He wants them to repent and be saved. God loves the people of the world so much that He sent His Son Jesus Christ into the world of sinners to win them back (Jn.3:16; 2Cor.5:18,19).
Jesus was sinless and overcame the temptations brought in by Satan. Grace and truth came to mankind through Jesus (Jn.1:17). He said, “I am the Way, the Truth and the Life; no one comes to the Father except through Me” (Jn.14:6). All those who want to know the truth must come to Jesus and learn from Him.
I received Jesus Christ as my Saviour in a Youth For Christ rally in Palayamkottai, Tamil Nadu, when I was 14. After graduation, I taught mathematics in St. John’s College in the same town along with a missionary professor Dr. Robert Burn. Before long, I went through a series of suffering and became depressed. I had no clue why God allowed suffering in my life, so I kept asking Him, “Why, God, why?” One day I shared my painful experiences with Dr. Robert Burn. He was compassionate and wept with me. Instantly I knew that he loved me and inferred that God loved me too. One of the things Dr. Burn told me was that we must not expect God to answer all our questions. His counselling helped me. I realised that God had a purpose for my sufferings. Then I understood God and relied on Him to reveal more truths to me.
He Knows Us By Name
The Israelites who suffered as slaves in Egypt under Pharaoh cried out, and their cry for help went up to God. He heard their groans and remembered His covenant with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. God was concerned about the Israelites. One day God called a shepherd, “Moses! Moses!” God said, “I am the God of your father, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac and the God of Jacob.” The Lord told Moses that He had indeed seen the misery of His people in Egypt and that He was concerned about their suffering. “I am sending you to Pharaoh to bring My people, the Israelites, out of Egypt.”
God called the boy Samuel by name. He also knows the name of each star in the sky. “Lift your eyes and look to the heavens. Who created all these? He who brings out the starry host one by one, and calls them each by name. Because of His great power and mighty strength, not one of them is missing” (Isa.40:26).
Jesus said, “Are not five sparrows sold for a tiny sum of money? Yet God does not forget about one of them. Even the number of hairs on your head is known. So do not fear. You are worth more than many sparrows” (Lk.12:6,7).
I never thought God had enemies, until the day I read what King David wrote. “The Lord says to my Lord, ‘Sit at my right hand until I make your enemies a footstool for your feet’” (Psa.110:1).
Here ‘the Lord’ refers to God our Father and ‘my Lord’ to David’s Lord, Jesus Christ. God asks Jesus to sit at His right hand until He makes Jesus’ enemies a footstool for Jesus’ feet. This is awesome and wonderful. Since His ascension, Jesus has been sitting at the right hand of the Father. He is on the throne. May many of His enemies become His friends. A famous example in history is a man called Saul of Tarsus who became Paul the apostle.
Abraham’s son Isaac blessed his own son Jacob, “May those who curse you be cursed and those who bless you be blessed” (Gen.27:29). The Lord said to Jacob (Israel), “I am the Lord, the God of your father Abraham and the God of Isaac. I will give you and your descendants the land on which you are lying. Your descendants will be like the dust of the earth, and you will spread out to the west and to the east, to the north and to the south. All peoples on earth will be blessed through you and your offspring. I am with you and will watch over you wherever you go… I will not leave you until I have done what I have promised you” (Gen.28:13-15).
All the families of the earth are blessed through Jesus Christ, who came in the family line of Israel. Your family will be blessed spiritually, and in many other ways, when they invite Jesus into their lives as their Lord and Saviour.
Jesus said, “When He, the Spirit of truth, comes, He will guide you into all truth. He will not speak on His own; He will speak only what He hears, and He will tell you what is yet to come.” (Jn.16:13).
The Spirit of truth is the Holy Spirit of God. He guides us into all truth, as we follow Jesus Christ. God is our Heavenly Teacher. He is the greatest Teacher. Praise the Lord!
The Lord Jesus tells us, “Greater love has no one than this – that he lay down his life for his friends. You are my friends if you do what I command. I no longer call you servants, because a servant does not know his master's business. Instead, I have called you friends, for everything that I learned from my Father I have made known to you. You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you to go and bear fruit – fruit that will last. Then the Father will give you whatever you ask in my name” (Jn.15:13-16).
The Bible says that spiritual things are spiritually discerned (1Cor.2:14). Although God is infinite and we are finite, we can understand Him to the extent He has revealed Himself to us through His Son, provided we have His Spirit within us (Rom.8:9). God became flesh and lived among us so that we may know Him personally and love Him. Jesus Christ is the exact representation of God (Jn.14:9).
May many more millions around the world enjoy our great God eternally.
