Acquiring intellectual knowledge, status in society, wealth, power and position seems to be the one thought uppermost in the minds of most people. Those possessing one or more of these 'status symbols' are considered 'successful' in life. In this relentless pursuit of success, many professing Christians have drifted away from God's plan for them and their children. It is painful to see our beloved kith and kin blissfully oblivious of the reality that the Devil is busy keeping them away from God's precise and best plans for their lives. The lure and demands of this world have left them with little or no time to listen to God's instructions! Church and fellowship are secondary. They are content with saying a quick prayer that God should bless them in their endeavours and make them successful.
God Spoke, And He Still Does
In Proverbs 8:1-31 the writer refers to 'wisdom' as an attribute of a sovereign and compassionate God, the Designer, Creator and Sustainer of the universe. Verses 22-36, read in context with verses 1-21, teach that choosing God's wisdom and instruction is finding God's blessing, God's life and God's favour.
Because we have left Him for transient things like silver and gold (vv.1-11), God in whose image we are created is passionately urging us to choose and follow His instructions.
An On-Going Conflict
Ever since the first man's fall in the Garden of Eden, the wisdom of God has an arch rival in the wisdom of Lucifer (Satan) who dared to question and oppose the wisdom of God (Gen.2:16-17;3:1-5). Being created with the freedom of choice, Adam and Eve chose to believe the deceitful wisdom of Satan, leading to disastrous consequences for humanity and the entire creation! We, the descendants of Adam and Eve, are victims of our own wrong choices, with scant regard for the wisdom that comes from our Creator.
The wisdom that proceeds from Satan is invariably in conflict with the wisdom of God. The arch rival of God and humanity continues to device ways and means to deceive gullible people, not sparing even the Christians! He usually succeeds in his diabolic endeavour because of our unbelief and stubborn attitude! "Satan, the god of this evil world, has blinded the minds of those who don't believe" (2Cor.4:4).
Christ Our Wisdom
But there is hope! God has not abandoned us yet! This is what He says, "And so, my children, listen to me, for happy are all who follow my ways. Listen to my counsel and be wise. Don't ignore it. Happy are those who listen to me, watching for me daily at my gates, waiting for me outside my home! For whoever finds me finds life and wins approval from the Lord! But those who miss me have injured themselves. All who hate me love death" (Pro.8:32-36).
According to 1 Corinthians 1:18-30 God chooses to bestow His wisdom on the humble and the lowly in order to shame the wisdom of this world that originates from the Devil. He chooses those who do not boast about their high status in society nor in the merits of their noble birth in a high-caste family.
Today God has made it a lot easier for us to find Him so that we don't miss Him! He inspired the apostle Paul to pen these words for our benefit and blessing: "God alone made it possible for you to be in Christ Jesus. For our benefit God made Christ to be wisdom itself. He is the one who made us acceptable to God. He made us pure and holy, and He gave Himself to purchase our freedom" (1Cor.1:30). These are excerpts from Paul's letter to the first century Christian believers in Corinth who chose to embrace God's wisdom offered in the person of Christ. This offer is available to anyone who humbles himself/herself and turns to the Giver of divine wisdom! You have to choose between the wisdom of this world and the wisdom of God. Your choice determines your destiny.
Instant Change Of Direction
An immediate result of our choice to accept God's wisdom is the instant change that occurs in the direction of our life. Instead of heading in the direction of death, in ceaseless pursuit of perishable things and worldly pleasures, we turn around and begin our journey towards eternity with God. This change in the direction brings us under the wise counsel of God, and we have a wonderful privilege of drawing wisdom and strength from Him as we journey on the path of life (Pro.8:32-36;Jas.1:5). We begin to re-arrange our priorities from eternity's point of view rather than being pre-occupied with the temporal and fleeting things.
In His Sermon on the Mount, Jesus told His disciples and all His listeners that they did not need to be anxious about their temporal needs like food, shelter and clothing because the heavenly Father cared for them and knew their every need. Having said that, He directed them to give priority to God's kingdom and righteousness, promising that their earthly needs would be met. Jesus does not mean we stop working and remain idle, expecting Him to feed and provide for us. Paul commands the Thessalonian Christians in the authority of Jesus Christ that they stay away from every Christian who lives in idleness and doesn't follow the tradition of hard work.(2Thess.3:6-13). For a Christian, giving priority to God's kingdom and righteousness essentially means demonstrating through speech and conduct the lifestyle that honours the King of kings and Lord of lords who has set up His kingdom in their hearts. This requires us to have a heart that is sensitive and obedient to the words of wisdom in the Bible.
"The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge. Only fools despise wisdom and discipline. All who fear the Lord will hate evil. That is why I hate pride, arrogance, corruption and perverted speech" (Pro.1:7;8:13 NLT).
Communing With God
One who consults God for guidance and direction does so through daily prayer and careful reading of God's word and acts on the instructions he/she receives (2Tim.3:14-17).When we commune with God daily, in the solitude of our closet and as a church, we receive the discerning spirit to recognise the subtle charms of the Devil that lead us away from the path God wants us to follow, and thereby we are enabled to overcome the enemy. Also, we have the assurance within us that the decisions and steps we take in life's journey are ordered or directed by the Lord. There is no substitute for unhurried communion with God if we desire to be led by the Spirit in our day-to-day activities and responsibilities. Christian brother, sister. Do you consult God for direction and guidance? Do you desire to be led by Godly wisdom?
