WHO REALLY DOES CONVERSION?

Madhu Chandra

Forced conversions are going on, in spite of the law!

Hindutva fundamentalists have deliberately chosen to view religious conversion by 'fraudulent' means as a crime and have endowed themselves with the authority to kill missionaries, rape nuns and vandalise churches for their 'crime' of 'forceful' conversion.

Who actually does fraudulent conversion? Christians are being falsely implicated by the saffron- sponsored media. I am one of the 2.5 million Manipuris whose forefathers were forcibly converted to Hinduism in the 19th century through the ritual of puyamwithaba (burning of Meitei Script) by Hindu missionaries. Ever since then, every Manipuri (Meitei) has 'Singh' suffixed to their name. Many youngsters are now abandoning 'Singh' and returning to their indigenous Meitei religion.

Casteism and untouchability emerged after the migration of Hindus to Manipur where caste or creed never existed earlier.

The saffronisation of Hindutva, which is purely a proselytising movement, does not end with my people in Manipur. The ongoing conversion of tribal communities to Hinduism is still in full swing in the various tribal-dominated areas.

We have witnessed the saffronising of Dang district of Gujarat during the Sabri Kumbha Mela in 2006. The tribals of Jhabua in MP, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, Assam, Arunachal etc., are examples of the saffronising propaganda of the Hindutva forces.

In the land where anti-conversion law is forcefully implemented, the tribal Christians in the Kandhamal district of Orissa are going through a nightmare at the hands of the Hindutva forces. To be alive in the village, "Become Hindu, or else get out or get killed," is a frequent threat meted out to the tribal Christians in Kandhamal. The law-making machinery calls it freedom of religion!

Christians in MP, Orissa and the other States where anti-conversion laws exist are accused of being involved in forced conversions whereas, in reality, the Christians themselves are the victims of forced conversion at the hands of the Hindutva forces.

When the Christian population in India has actually declined in the last twenty years, what on earth is the basis for alleging that Christians are engaged in conversion activities? Obviously, it is a hate campaign of the Hindutva forces, with the freedom to rape and kill people, burn and vandalise the churches. The Constitution of India grants freedom to all religions to welcome people from other religions, exercising their free will. It is in fact the Hindutva forces who employ force and fraudulent means to convert people against their wishes, just as they did it to my forefathers in Manipur. The present community is still suffering its consequences.
